If you’ve ever thought, “I am so tired of repeating myself,” then this blog post is for you.
It happens every year.
You explain the group work directions.
Model the routine.
Maybe even write it all out.
Then- five minutes in:
“Wait… are we allowed to talk right now?”
“Do we have to turn this in?”
“Can I go sharpen my pencil?”
🙃
Honestly, some days I felt like a broken record.
I’d repeat expectations, redirect behavior, and re-teach the same thing three different ways—just to get through a 45-minute class.
It wasn’t that students were trying to ignore the expectations.
They just couldn’t remember all of them—especially when the activity or structure changed.
That’s when I realized I didn’t need more rules.
I needed more clarity.
Things really changed when I became more intentional about what went on the walls, and these CHAMPS posters are a great example of that.
In this article, I’m going to share plenty of practical tips to help expectations stick the first time.

Why Clear Expectations Matter More Than Rules
Over the years, I’ve moved away from top-down classroom rules and started co-creating classroom norms through things like a Social Contract.
But there’s another piece that’s just as important – especially when it comes to day-to-day routines and transitions.
Students need to know what’s expected of them at each stage of learning.
Not just what the overall rules are.
That’s where CHAMPS comes in.
What Is CHAMPS?
CHAMPS is a simple, visual behavior management system that helps students know what’s expected of them during different classroom activities.
The acronym breaks things down clearly:
-
C – Conversation: Can we talk right now? At what level?
-
H – Help: How do I get help if I’m stuck?
-
A – Activity: What are we actually doing?
-
M – Movement: Am I allowed to get up or move around?
-
P – Participation: What does it look like to be “on task”?
-
S – Success: What does success look like for this task?
It answers every question before they have to ask.
Instead of repeating yourself 12 times a day, you can just point to the board.
The Shift I Didn’t Expect
Once I started posting my CHAMPS expectations at the start of each activity, the change was almost instant.
-
Fewer interruptions
-
Smoother transitions
-
Less confusion (and way less frustration—for everyone)
-
And maybe best of all? My students felt more confident.
Because when students know what’s expected, they’re more likely to meet it.
It removes the guesswork—and creates space for actual learning.
CHAMPS Works With Your Classroom Culture
If you’ve already built a calm, intentional learning environment or co-created classroom norms with a social contract, then CHAMPS fits right in.
It doesn’t replace those systems—it supports them.
Your contract sets the tone.
CHAMPS makes the daily routines stick.
And both work best when they’re visual, consistent, and student-centered.
