Five beliefs that have completely changed the way I teach mathematics.
When you hear the phrase Modern Math Teacher, what comes to mind?
Maybe technology. Artificial intelligence. Project-based learning. Interactive lessons. New strategies. Some shiny new tool that promises to transform your classroom.
And honestly, I love many of those things, but that’s not what I mean when I talk about being a Modern Math Teacher.
To me, being a Modern Math Teacher has very little to do with whether you’re using the newest technology or following the latest educational trend.
It’s about intentionality.
It’s about being willing to look at the learning experience you’re creating and ask, Why am I doing this? What do my students need? And how can I make this experience more meaningful?
Over the years, I’ve realized that there are five beliefs that shape the way I approach mathematics instruction. They aren’t a checklist, and they aren’t another teaching framework to add to your already-full plate.
They’re the beliefs I keep coming back to when I’m planning, reflecting, and trying to figure out what could work better.
1. Meaning Matters
Students don’t automatically become engaged just because we’ve connected a lesson to the “real world.”
We’ve all seen the forced real-world problem. The one where students are asked to calculate something that technically happens in real life, but feels completely disconnected from anything they actually care about.
Meaning is about more than context.
It’s about helping students understand why the mathematics matters, what they can do with it, and how it connects to the way they make sense of the world.
Sometimes that means choosing a context students genuinely recognize. Sometimes it means giving students a problem worth thinking about. And sometimes it simply means slowing down long enough to let students notice something interesting about the mathematics itself.
The goal isn’t to make every lesson entertaining.
It’s to make the mathematics worth engaging with.
That distinction has changed the way I plan.
2. Belonging Comes Before Confidence
I used to think confidence was the thing students needed first.
If I could help students experience success, I thought, eventually they’d become more confident mathematicians.
But I’ve started thinking about it differently.
Before students can fully believe they’re capable mathematicians, they need to believe they belong in the mathematics classroom.
That matters because students walk into our classrooms carrying years of stories about themselves.
- “I’m not a math person.”
- “I’m just bad at this.”
- “I’m only good at math if I get the answer right away.”
- “I don’t belong in this class.”
We don’t get to control all of the experiences that created those beliefs. But we do get to create new experiences.
A classroom where students’ ideas are valued, where mistakes aren’t treated as evidence of inability, where students are expected to contribute, question, revise, explain, and make sense of mathematics.
Those experiences give students new evidence about who they are as mathematicians.
And sometimes, belonging has to come before confidence.
3. Thinking Matters More Than Workload
For a long time, I thought rigor meant challenge.
If students finished quickly, I added more problems. If they mastered something, I made the numbers more complicated. Bigger fractions. Messier decimals. Longer equations.
I thought I was increasing rigor.
What I eventually realized was that I was often increasing the workload, not the thinking.
Those aren’t the same thing.
A student can complete twenty-five problems using the exact same reasoning over and over again. Another student can spend twenty minutes wrestling with one carefully designed problem, comparing strategies, defending an idea, noticing a pattern, or critiquing someone else’s reasoning.
Which student is doing more mathematical thinking?
That’s the question I care about now.
Practice matters. Fluency matters. Students need opportunities to build accuracy and efficiency.
But I also want to intentionally create moments where students have to wonder, justify, predict, compare, explain, and make decisions.
That’s where richer mathematical thinking happens.
So instead of asking, How can I make this lesson harder?
I try to ask:
Where do I want my students to think more deeply?
That’s a much more interesting planning question.
4. Teaching Should Be Sustainable
I don’t want to build a classroom that looks incredible in September and leaves me completely exhausted by April.
I’ve been that teacher.
The teacher who sees an amazing idea and immediately thinks, I need to try that.
Who spends hours creating one incredible lesson and then realizes the next day’s lesson still needs to be planned.
The teacher who keeps adding more because somewhere along the way, “engaging” started to feel like it meant “extra.”
I’ve learned that great teaching doesn’t have to mean constantly creating something new.
In fact, some of the strongest parts of my classroom are the things students already know how to do.
Routines. Discussion structures. Reflection protocols. Ways of working together. Systems that become more effective because we use them repeatedly.
Those things might not look particularly exciting on Instagram.
But they work.
And when students understand the routines, I have more energy to focus on the things that matter: listening to their thinking, asking better questions, noticing misconceptions, and responding to what is actually happening in the room.
I don’t want to create a classroom that depends on me constantly performing.
I want to create one that works.
5. Professional Judgment Matters
This might be one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as I’ve gained experience as a teacher.
Curriculum matters.
Research matters.
Standards matter.
But none of those things replace professional judgment.
There will always be a curriculum lesson that needs a little adjustment for a particular group of students. There will be a class that needs more discussion. A group that needs more structure. A student who needs a different entry point.
That isn’t failing to follow the curriculum.
That’s teaching.
Two teachers can use the exact same lesson and create completely different experiences for students.
The curriculum can provide the structure, the goals, the tasks, and the sequence. But the teacher is still the person interpreting all of that information and making decisions based on the humans sitting in front of them.
That’s why I don’t think great teachers need to start with a blank page.
They need to know how to use the tools they have intentionally.
So…What Is a Modern Math Teacher?
When I put these five beliefs together, I realize that none of them require the newest technology.
They don’t require a particular curriculum, or a specific teaching strategy, and they definitely don’t require having every lesson figured out.
Instead, they require something much harder.
Reflection.
A Modern Math Teacher is willing to keep asking questions.
Does this experience create meaning?
Do my students feel like they belong here?
Where are they doing the thinking?
Is this sustainable for me and my students?
What does my professional judgment tell me this group needs?
Those questions matter regardless of what curriculum you’re using, what technology is available, or what the latest educational trend happens to be.
Because strategies change.
Technology changes.
Curriculum changes.
But intentional teachers can adapt.
This Isn’t a Destination
I don’t think being a Modern Math Teacher means you’ve figured everything out.
I still have lessons that don’t work the way I hoped, and I still think of a better question five minutes after a discussion ends, and I still make changes to lessons the next time I teach them.
And honestly, I hope that never stops.
One of the most valuable professional habits we can develop is the willingness to look back and ask, What did this experience teach me?
Not just about our students.
About ourselves.
Every lesson gives us information.
The question is whether we’re willing to pay attention to it.
That’s what I hope Modern Math Teacher means.
Not someone who always uses the newest thing, or has the most impressive classroom, or has mastered every teaching strategy.
A teacher who thoughtfully chooses the right thing for the students in front of them.
And then reflects, adjusts, and keeps growing.

- Meaning matters
- Your students need to feel like they belong before they can fully believe in themselves.
- Rigor isn’t about more work.
- Your classroom needs to be sustainable.
- Your professional judgment deserves a seat at the table.
Whatever it is, remember that our beliefs shape our decisions.
Our decisions shape our classrooms.
And our classrooms shape the mathematical experiences our students carry with them.
That’s the work of becoming a Modern Math Teacher.
Not becoming perfect.
Becoming more intentional.
