The Winter Break Reset: Starting Fresh in January

Winter break provides a natural pause in the school year, making January the perfect time to reset your classroom routines. Students return with renewed energy and often benefit from revisiting expectations and norms.

Steps to Reset Your Classroom:

  1. Revisit Classroom Norms
Begin by reflecting on what worked during the first semester and what could improve. Use these insights to adjust your classroom expectations and procedures.
  2. Gather Student Feedback
Involve your students in the reset process to create buy-in. Use tools like Google Forms or Poll Everywhere to ask questions such as:

    • What classroom rules or routines help you succeed?
    • What’s one area where we can improve?
  3. Reestablish Expectations
Once you’ve gathered feedback, revisit your classroom norms. Clearly communicate any updates to ensure students understand what’s expected.

CHAMPS Strategies for Success

The CHAMPS behavior management framework is a proactive, positive approach that sets clear expectations in five key areas:

  1. Conversation: When is it okay to talk?
  2. Help: How do students ask for assistance?
  3. Activity: What is the task, and what should students be doing?
  4. Movement: Can students move around the classroom?
  5. Participation: What does active participation look like?

By breaking routines into these categories, CHAMPS helps create structure and minimizes confusion.

Example in Action:
During group work, outline:

  • When students can talk and at what volume.
  • How they should signal for help.
  • What they’re expected to accomplish during the activity.

Using AI to Enhance CHAMPS Behavior Management

AI tools can take your classroom management strategies to the next level.

  • Behavior Tracking: Tools like ClassDojo (one of my personal faves!) allow you to monitor patterns and engagement. These insights can help you identify students who may need extra support and streamline communication with families.
  • Interactive Routines: Use AI polling tools like Mentimeter to make revisiting expectations interactive and engaging.

Involving Students: Co-Creating a Social Contract

One of the best ways to ensure classroom expectations stick is by involving students in the process. A Social Contract outlines the behaviors everyone agrees to follow, creating a sense of ownership and accountability.

What is a Social Contract

How to Create a Social Contract with Students:

  1. Brainstorm Expectations: Ask students what they believe makes a positive learning environment.
  2. Use AI for Visuals: Create a visually appealing Social Contract using tools like Canva.
  3. Interactive Voting: Use AI polling tools to let students vote on the most important norms.

When students contribute to creating the rules, they’re more likely to adhere to them.
