11 reasons why every math teacher needs AI

If you’re a math teacher who wants to save time, engage students, and enhance learning outcomes, without spending extra hours making it happen– then you, my friend, are in the right place.

Before I discovered the power of AI, and AI lesson planning tools, I struggled with finding time to create differentiated lesson plans, personalize instruction, and keep students engaged. All the best practices that I hold near and dear to my heart. But honestly?  The workload was overwhelming, and despite my best efforts, some students still struggled while others needed more challenge. Sound familiar?

When I realized how many other math teachers faced the same struggles, I knew I had to find a solution—not just for myself but for all of us. Now, instead of spending hours creating materials, I use AI-powered tools to generate engaging problems, CRAFT high quality lessons plans,  provide instant feedback, and personalize learning paths for my students.

So if you want to improve efficiency, enhance student engagement, and reduce the stress of lesson planning, I’m here to let you know that AI tools  can help. Here are 11 reasons why every math teacher needs AI in their classroom.

Reason #1: You’ll get More Done in Less Time

It’s easy to get distracted by everything the admin throws at us, isn’t it? But it doesn’t have to derail you, not with AI lesson planning tools and the right prompting framework.

When you know how to properly prompt AI, you’ll get more of the important things done, in way less time.

Math AI tools streamline the lesson planning process, generating AI lesson plans, practice problems, and assessments in seconds. With AI lesson planning tools, you can focus on refining and personalizing instead of starting from scratch.

For example: Instead of manually creating a week’s worth of differentiated practice, I use a math AI generator like ChatGPT, Brisk or Diffit to create tiered problem sets instantly.

Using the CRAFT prompting framework, I can also design effective AI-generated prompts that align with my learning objectives and student needs.

What is the CRAFT Framework? Glad you asked…

Reason #2: You’ll Gain Clarity in Lesson Planning

When your lesson planning process is supported by AI, you have a clear structure to follow. AI lesson planning tools help organize materials, ensuring that each lesson aligns with learning goals and standards.

Back in my early teaching days, I spent hours trying to balance rigor and engagement. Now, with AI lesson planning tools and the CRAFT framework, I simply input my objectives, and AI suggests structured lessons tailored to my students’ needs.

Introducing the CRAFT Framework for Lesson Planning: Crafting meaningful learning experiences one prompt at a time.

What is C.R.A.F.T. ?

  • C: Context – The background or situation.
  • R: Role – Who is involved or taking part.
  • A: Activity/Task – What needs to be done.
  • F: Format – The structure or output.
  • T: Targets/Takeaways – The instructional goals of the lesson.

The CRAFT lesson planning prompt can help design everything from engaging hands-on  activities, interactive whole-group instruction, or differentiated lesson plans to address the needs of every student in your classroom.

Reason #3: You’ll be known as the Go-To Teacher

The best way to elevate your teaching status is to become the rock star expert in your school. Whether you want to be known as the PBL Queen, or the Tech Guru, finding your passion and sticking to it will help you become THE Go-To Teacher in your school.  And all the students will suddenly want to be in your class– Yes, even if you’re teaching them Algebra!

Integrating AI into your teaching practice not only improves your efficiency but also positions you as a forward-thinking,  and dare I say trendy educator. Schools and districts value teachers who embrace innovation to enhance student learning. Students love teachers who aren’t afraid to shake things up and try something new–especially if you’re embracing a cultural revolution!

If you’re unsure where to start, begin by exploring AI math websites that generate custom quizzes and assessments like Brisk, Khanmigo, and ChatGPT to build interactive problem-solving experiences for students.

Reason #4: You’ll Maximize Learning for Every Student

With so many AI math problem solvers out there, it can be challenging to know if a student is actually doing their work. But what if we flipped the script and instead of banning AI math tools, we encouraged our students to use them thoughtfully?

AI-powered tools can analyze student performance and provide targeted practice, helping struggling students catch up while allowing advanced learners to move ahead. And it can do it WITHOUT you being right there. Tools like Snorkl can capture students’ learning and problem solving in real time, and give them feedback and nudges–just like you would!

What’s more,: math AI problem solvers like Photomath, Symbolab, and Wolfram Alpha offer step-by-step explanations tailored to a student’s unique mistakes, ensuring deeper understanding. Inviting your students to use these as tools to learn from, rather than a quick-fix to an easy 10 point homework assignment, shifts the narrative of AI in the classroom.

Reason #5: You’ll Boost Student Engagement

Do you suffer from a class full of blank stares and crickets? You’re not alone – every teacher on the planet does at times, so don’t feel bad about it. Instead, take action!

The fastest way to overcome this is to student apathy is to engage them with content they want to learn (hint, it’s real, relevant AND rigorous) and to use tools that speak to them

Students are naturally drawn to technology, and AI-powered tools create an interactive and dynamic learning environment.

Instead of static worksheets, AI-powered platforms generate real-world math applications related to students’ interests—whether it’s sports, video games, or social media analytics. I use AI lesson planning tools in conjunction with Snorkl, which provides multimodal learning to enhance student engagement.

Reason #6: You’ll Make Assessment Easier

We got into teaching because we love to teach. NOT because we love to assess and collect data. So let’s let AI help us with that.

AI lesson planning tools don’t just generate problems; they provide real-time analytics on student progress, allowing you to make data-driven decisions about instruction. Data collection and analysis, done for me in a snap? You know I’m all about that!

Teachers can import data directly into tools like ChatGPT and ask it to run a real time analysis on strengths and weaknesses. Then you can use the CRAFT lesson planning prompt to generate next-step lesson plans for your students.

And with AI math chat tools like Brisk AI Chat, Conker AI, and Khanmigo, students can ask questions and receive immediate AI-generated explanations, reinforcing learning in the moment.

Win-win for all of us.

The Ultimate Guide to Math AIReason #7: You’ll Save Time Grading

Can I get a hallelujah?! Time is a limited resource that we all wish we had more of. We can’t, but what we can do is “find” more.

When you use AI to help you grade,  you’ll find your time “savings bank” is full again, allowing you to do more of the things you’ve been wanting to – like reading the latest Book of the Month novel that *Just* arrived. (No? Just me?)

Whether you’re looking for technology tools that automatically grade practice sets for you, or you’re looking for help giving feedback on bulkier projects and assessments, AI can help.

Grading math assignments can be time-consuming, but AI-powered tools can provide instant, detailed feedback.

For example: Instead of manually checking each problem, I use an AI math solver like Edia, or Mathway that grades student work and offers step-by-step corrections automatically, saving me hours of assessment time. Needing to assess 100+ projects and want to make sure you’re assessing them all fairly? Try using Brisk– my absolute favorite Google Chrome extension for providing quick and powerful feedback to students.

Reason #8: You’ll Save Money on Classroom Resources

When you use AI tools to support you in lesson planning,  you can start plugging those curriculum  holes.

Do you really need to create those review problems  yourself, or should you grab a pre-made resource on TpT? Your time is valuable, and so is your money. If creating the review problems on your own isn’t the best use of your time, then use AI tools to do it instead.

With AI, you no longer need to purchase expensive pre-made worksheets or assessments that may or may not be aligned with your curriculum. Many math AI websites provide free or low-cost resources that align with your curriculum, including adaptive platforms like Diffit and Quillionz to modify materials for various reading levels.

Now, I’m not saying AI is the end-all-be-all for classroom resources– there are plenty of them that you will want to design yourself or purchase from a professional, BUT for a low-lift activity like a worksheet or review problems, AI has got your back.

Reason #9: You’ll be able to Differentiate Instruction with EaseAI math lesson planning

Listen, differentiation is essential, but it is also  time-consuming, especially if you have a variety of needs in your classroom. And don’t we all? Good news, there’s a better way.

AI lesson planning tools automatically adjust the difficulty level of problems based on student responses, ensuring that each learner gets what they need.

For example: Math AI generators like Brisk and Diffit can create custom problem sets for small groups based on real-time assessment data, much like the CRAFT framework helps in designing targeted AI prompts for diverse learners.

AI can help tailor instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners by:

  • Adapting Content: Simplifying or enriching problems based on student ability.
  • Providing Real-Time Feedback: Offering students instant guidance and explanations.
  • Personalizing Practice: Creating customized assignments based on individual performance.

Examples of AI in Differentiation:

  1. Simplifying Concepts: Generate a step-by-step explanation of solving a system of equations for struggling learners.
  2. Advanced Challenges: Create complex, multi-step problems for advanced students.

My CRAFT Lesson planning prompt helps you to differentiate easily and painlessly.

It all leads to helping more people.

Here’s how it works:

  • CRAFT Your Prompt
  • Let AI work it’s magic
  • Take the AI created lesson and tweak it to fit your needs!

Let’s look at the CRAFT framework in action to support our struggling learners.

C (Context):
You are a middle school math teacher supporting struggling learners who need additional scaffolding and practice to build confidence and mastery in solving two-step equations.

R (Role):
You are a coach guiding students through a step-by-step approach to problem-solving, ensuring they understand the logic behind each operation.

A (Activity/Task):
Design a lesson that breaks down solving two-step equations into manageable steps, incorporating visual aids, hands-on activities, and opportunities for guided and independent practice.

F (Format):
The lesson should include:

  1. A warm-up activity reviewing prerequisite skills, such as inverse operations and simplifying expressions.
  2. Explicit instruction with color-coded, step-by-step examples (e.g., using highlighters to show how to isolate variables).
  3. A hands-on activity, such as using balance scales or manipulatives, to model equations physically.
  4. Scaffolded practice problems that gradually increase in complexity, with guided practice for support.
  5. An exit ticket to assess their understanding in a low-stakes way.

T (Takeaways):
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Identify the two steps needed to solve equations with one variable.
  2. Solve equations accurately, explaining their reasoning.
  3. Feel more confident in tackling similar problems independently.

And just like that, AI will create a lesson for you! Take it as is or adapt it to meet the needs of your students and the materials you have available to you.

Reason #10: You’ll Help More Students Succeed

That’s the goal right?! AI isn’t just about automation—it’s about creating better learning experiences. With AI-powered tutoring and step-by-step math solvers, students receive instant guidance, reducing frustration and increasing confidence. Brisk, Snorkl, and Khanmigo are tools I often rely on to provide students with AI-driven feedback and enhanced comprehension.
